After the downfall of the USSR brought an end to the bi-polarity system that dominated the Cold War era, the current international system is heading towards a multi-polarity system via regional alliances such as the European Union, NAFTA, and the Asian Seven Dragons. Therefore, the collective interest is seen today as more important than that of the individual.  Meanwhile, the Arab countries remain scattered and divided over crucial and important issues, which affect their potential as a united international power.

Since the early 1980's, the Arabian Gulf states have realized the importance of Arab unity. This has led to the establishment of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Abu-Dhabi in 1981 with a mission to unite Arabs in general and the Gulf States in particular. However, if these formal efforts towards unity are not combined with the effort and support of the public, this unity will become no more than a distant and unattainable Utopist vision.

This reality motivated us as students studying in the United States of America to establish the Arabian Gulf Student Union (AGSU): a non-profit organization open to all Arabian Gulf students yearning to see a truly unified Arabian Gulf. The AGSU exists for the benefits of these GCC students.

We, the people of the region, have much in common and we look forward to working together towards a better and more improved world for our successors as well as all Arabs.
